How to Write Product Descriptions That Convert Buyers

Your description is where buyers decide. Here's a formula that works.

The Formula

  1. Hook — one line stating what it is and why it matters
  2. Specs — bullet points of key features
  3. Condition — honest description of wear/age
  4. What's included — box, accessories, receipt
  5. Reason for selling — builds trust
  6. Call to action — "Chat to discuss" or "Serious buyers only"

Example (Bad)

"iPhone for sale. Call me."

Example (Good)

iPhone 13 Pro Max 256GB, Sierra Blue.

  • Battery health: 89%
  • Face ID working perfectly
  • Screen: no scratches, original
  • Comes with box + original charger
  • Used for 8 months, no repairs
  • Selling because I upgraded to iPhone 15
  • Price: ₦780,000 (slightly negotiable)
  • Can meet in Ikeja or VI for inspection

Words That Convert

  • "Original" — signals authenticity
  • "Slightly negotiable" — signals flexibility
  • "No repairs" — signals quality
  • "Inspection welcome" — signals confidence
  • "Receipt available" — signals trust

Words That Kill Sales

  • "No time wasters" — sounds aggressive
  • "Final price" — closes negotiation early
  • "As seen in picture" — suggests hidden issues
  • Typos or all caps — looks unprofessional
